How are burrs produced in metal processing?

July 25, 2024
Burr formation in metalworking is a phenomenon related to material properties and processing techniques. This article will introduce the mechanism of burr formation, including its causes, influencing factors, and common scenarios, in order to better understand and take appropriate measures.

Causes of Burr Formation
Material plastic deformation: In metalworking such as cutting, stamping, or casting, when the material is cut or shaped, it undergoes plastic deformation due to its plastic properties. These changes can cause the edge parts to stretch and tear during material removal or shaping, leading to the establishment of burrs.
Impact of processing techniques: Different metalworking methods have varying impacts on burr formation. For example, in cutting operations, tool wear, improper choice of cutting speed, and feed rate can lead to burr formation. In stamping processes, mold wear and inaccurate fitting can also cause burrs.
Material type: Different metal materials have varying physical and chemical properties, and the likelihood and extent of burr formation under the same processing conditions also vary. For instance, some harder materials may be more prone to burr formation during processing.
Influencing Factors of Burr Formation
Processing parameters: These include cutting speed, feed rate, tool type, and wear state, which directly affect the size and shape of burrs.
Workpiece and tool materials: The hardness and toughness of the workpiece material, as well as the hardness and wear resistance of the tool material, will affect burr formation.
Processing path and cutting direction: The path and direction of cutting or shaping will affect the location and severity of burrs on the workpiece.

Common Burr Formation Scenarios
Cutting processes: In cutting processes such as turning and milling, especially during high-speed cutting, burrs are likely to form on the edges of the workpiece.
Stamping processes: In stamping, the material undergoes plastic deformation under the action of the mold, which can easily result in burrs at the sheared edges.
Casting and forging: In these processes, due to the unevenness of material flow, burrs may also form on the surface or edges of the metal.

Burr formation is a common issue in the metalworking process, affecting not only the appearance quality of the product but also potentially affecting the part's assembly and functionality, and may even cause injury to the user. CTT can effectively prevent and reduce burr formation by choosing appropriate processing parameters, using suitable tool and mold materials, and optimizing the processing path and cutting direction.
